We are known for quality, reliability, technical expertise, and the ability to keep promises. Nevertheless, many Finnish companies face challenges in international markets that cannot be solved with a better product or new technology.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wow fadeInUp\" data-wow-delay=\".3s\"><p>Often it's about visibility, networking, and the courage to make yourself known.<\/p>\n<p><cite>Paul Fager<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>A good product isn't always enough<\/h2>\n<p>In Finnish business culture, the idea that a good product sells itself has long prevailed. This might work reasonably well in the domestic market, but international markets face significantly tougher competition.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses that succeed globally don't just offer quality products and services \u2013 they also know how to talk about them. They actively build relationships with customers, partners and stakeholders, and invest in visibility and networks.<\/p>\n<p>When a Finnish company arrives at an international event expecting interested parties to come and talk to them, a competitor from another country might already be actively presenting their solutions to dozens of potential customers.<\/p>\n<h2>Modesty can turn into invisibility<\/h2>\n<p>Modesty is valued in Finnishness. We generally do not wish to exaggerate our achievements or highlight our own expertise.<\/p>\n<p>However, in international business, this can lead to the company's true value remaining hidden.<\/p>\n<p>In many cultures, highlighting one's expertise is seen as normal and even essential in business. If a Finnish company cautiously describes its solution while competitors boldly speak of market leadership and innovation, it's easy to get the impression that the competitors have more to offer \u2013 even if the reality is completely the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>It's not about arrogance. It's about the potential customer quickly understanding why your solution is the one to choose.<\/p>\n<h2>International growth is built on networks<\/h2>\n<p>Studies on internationalisation highlight the importance of networks for company growth. Entry into new markets rarely happens alone. Partners, customers, distributors, and local contacts open doors that a mere website or sales brochure cannot.<\/p>\n<p>This is often an opportunity for Finnish companies to develop.<\/p>\n<p>Networking doesn't mean being pushy or constantly selling yourself. It means taking an active interest in other people, initiating conversations, maintaining relationships, and having the courage to talk about your own expertise.<\/p>\n<p>Many international trades begin with one conversation, one meeting, or one mutual contact.<\/p>\n<h2>Courage is a competitive advantage<\/h2>\n<p>The world values Finnishness more than we often realise ourselves. Honesty, reliability, and high competence are qualities that customers seek.<\/p>\n<p>This is why Finnish companies do not need to become different people to succeed internationally. Instead, we should combine our strong expertise with bolder visibility.<\/p>\n<p>When a high-quality product combines with active networking, clear communication, and the courage to talk about one's own strengths, a Finnish company has every opportunity to succeed internationally as well.<\/p>\n<h2>Finally<\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps the question isn't whether Finns are too shy abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps a better question is:<\/p>\n<p>How many international clients will we fail to find if we don't boldly communicate our capabilities?<\/p>\n<p>Finnish companies have a lot to offer the world.
